X-Rite ColorChecker Passport

Accurate color representation is super important. So why is it that many of us don’t take the time to properly check the accuracy of that color as we are shooting? The X-Rite ColorChecker Passport is merely one of many ways to accomplish that task taking you all the way through from shooting to editing.

Standard grey cards which have 18%-20% reflectance are one way of helping to check for an accurate white balance and assist in elimination of color casts. A primary feature that I like about the Passport is it’s plastic hard case. Grey cards are usually just that, a grey heavy stock paper card which is easily bent, creased, etc. Even with the best of care and intentions, a standard grey card is going to have a limited life based on it’s composition. By default, this makes them susceptible to bending, folding, scratches, etc.  The plastic case of the passport was an immediate draw to the product. Throw it in the bag, literally if needed, and no damage to the grey card or color swatches. It’s hard case also doubles as a stand allowing you to prop up the Passport without the need for an assistant to hold it. The Passport has 3 main features –

  • White Balance Target

The White balance Target assists with eliminating color casts and if used properly provides better histogram reliability.

  • Creative Enhancement Target

The Creative Enhancement Target provides several things. Across the top you get support with hue, saturation and lightness. Below that you get 10 swatches to assist with warming and cooling. The bottom row provides support for highlights and detail.

  • Classic Target

The Classic Target provides color reference. Shoot with it in the exact same lighting as you plan to shoot your subject. Once in post, leverage it as a reference for color correction as needed.

  • Width 3 and 9/16 Inches
  • Length 4 and 15/16 Inches
  • Height 1/4 Inch
  • Weight 2.9 oz.

The Passport is priced at $99.00 as of the writing of this review.
